The time has come to call for applications for our last annual competition – how fast time passes! We are very proud of the success of the activities funded by the Center, as confirmed by the recent CIHR evaluation. We will not be changing procedures for this last competition. Applications for the scholarship and project competitions will be evaluated by a peer-review committee of five university assessors from different research disciplines.
The budget for the scholarship competition includes one post-doctoral fellowship at $36,750, three master’s or Ph.D. scholarships for a total of $60,000, and one summer-student scholarship at $4,500. To apply for this competition, please submit the following documents:
- The student’s CV, a letter explaining his or her reasons for applying, and the most recent transcript;
- A presentation (maximum one page) by the researcher(s) at the Center who will be supervising the student; the name of the project, the student’s role, and the academic program in which the student is enrolled (for master’s or Ph.D. students).
For students who are currently receiving funding from the Center, we encourage supervisors to seek other sources of scholarship support after the first year. It is possible, however, to apply for an extension; each application will be examined on its own merit.
At the same time, we are announcing the competition to various centers with an interest in occupational asthma in Canada and abroad. If we receive applications, depending on the expertise and interest of the student or fellow, we will forward their applications for your consideration, and if you are interested, you can submit an application for the competition.
The budget for the project competition includes seven funds at $20,000 each. The one-page, single-spaced letter of intention should include the following information:
- name of project;
- identification of the principal investigator (no more than two applications for each principal investigator);
- researchers from the Center, scientific partners (IRSST) and strategic partners (public health department, CSST) involved; as well as national or international collaboration, specifically projects that involve professionals and researchers from developing countries;
- the names of students working on the project (whether they are funded by the Center or not);
- the project, including an introduction, objective and hypotheses, methods and significance;
- some information on how the $20,000 budget would be spent (equipment, salary, etc.).
In the selection process, preference will be given to projects that:
- include researchers from different disciplines;
- will produce spin-off effects or collaborative efforts with scientific or strategic partners (public health department, CSST);
- enable students to make a real contribution;
- involve national and/or international partnerships.
The deadline for applications is Friday, March 6, 2009, at 5 p.m.
Heartfelt thanks for your active involvement in the success and outreach of the Asthma in the Workplace Center.
