4.4. Occupational asthma with no latency period: bronchial irritation syndrome

In this case, there are no apparent predisposing factors for the worker, except a form of bronchial irritation syndrome that may be found more frequently in subjects who are allergic to allergens in the general environment. The concentration and nature of the causal agent will determine the severity of the attack. Any agent that is inhaled under high-concentration conditions can cause bronchial irritation. However, fumes and aerosols are more liable to cause irritation than dry particles. Unlike occupational asthma with a latency period, there is no latency period here, since the accidental bronchial attack comes on suddenly. Progress will depend on the degree of severity of the accident involving inhalation. Most subjects suffer permanent effects, with persistent asthmatic symptoms.
